# How Growlytics Works

With this quick start guide to all things Growlytics, you will be up and running in a jiffy!

Hello there! You have arrived at the Growlytics platform where you get to utilize a plethora of features that will help your business grow. This guide will take you through the essential tips and tricks to help you get started as swiftly as possible.  &#x20;

The articles in this section will introduce you to the terminologies and features followed by a detailed walkthrough of the core concepts involved with operating the Growlytics platform. Further in this Help Center we will take a closer look at each idea and talk about how you can seamlessly integrate your system(s) with ours.  &#x20;

## How Growlytics Works

The big picture - Growlytics stores data pertaining to your customer's profile, and activities. It allows you to send customized campaigns to these customers based on their profile details, past activities, and behavior.

### Customer Profiles

The customer is the center of the universe at Growlytics. A customer profile is created for every user visiting your website or launching your mobile app. A customer profile consists of Attributes - like email id, mobile number, name, activity logs, devices, segments, etc.

Learn more about Customer Profiles here: [Growlytics Customer Profiles](/customers-and-segments/customer-profile)

### Events

Activities performed by customers on your website or mobile app are called Events. Events can be used to trigger campaigns in response to audience activity on your system. Examples of events would be - Product Viewed, Add to Cart, Purchased, etc.&#x20;

Learn more about Events here: [Growlytics Events](/best-practices/data-management/events)

### Segments

Segments offer you the easiest way to group customers based on their attributes and behavior. For example, a segment of 'Loyal Customers' can comprise all those customers who spent more than 'x' amount on your website/app. Segments can be used to trigger campaigns, create suppression lists, broadcast audiences, custom conversion goals, and more.

Learn more about Segments here: [Segments](/customers-and-segments/segmentation)

### Campaigns

Campaigns help you communicate with your customers. Through campaigns, you can broadcast messages with the click of a button, or send automated messages to customers when they do or do not perform certain activities on your website/app.&#x20;

Learn more about Campaigns here: [Campaigns Overview](/campaigns/campaigns-overview)

# Journeys Basics

Design and automate campaigns that guide customers through their buying journey with your brand.

Today customers expect a personalized and engaging experience from brands. Growlytics Journeys enable marketers to do just that by providing an all-inclusive customer experience across multiple messaging channels while driving engagement.&#x20;

### What is a Journey?

Simply put, a Journey is a campaign planning tool used to design and ***automate omnichannel campaigns*** that guide customers through their shopping experience with your brand. Journeys are ideal for engaging customers across their lifecycles on your website or mobile app.&#x20;

Examples of Journeys:

* **Abandoned Cart Journey:** Connect with shoppers who add items to their carts but don’t finish orders. Send personalized behavioral messages that encourage them to return and complete that purchase.
* **Purchase Thank You Journey:** Send an automated thank-you message when they make a purchase.

<figure><img src="/files/8d3RiZ6Avlyh0kzztlyW" alt=""><figcaption><p>Journey Example - Post Purchase Thank You</p></figcaption></figure>

* **Retention Journey:** Re-engagement campaigns that run for longer durations, to pull users back if they begin to slip away.

# Create a Journey

This article will help understand how you can create journeys on Growlytics.

Creating a journey involves four steps, watch this video for a detailed tutorial or follow the instructions mentioned below.

{% embed url="<https://youtu.be/1o9TFCkm2sI>" %}

1. **Set Trigger**: Define how a customer will enter the journey. For instance, it can be when a customer performs an activity, enters a segment, etc.
2. **Add Actions & Conditions:** Once the customer enters the journey via a trigger, you can define the messages that you want to send, wait for a given period of time before sending the message, and put conditions to personalize the campaigns. For example, if you don't want to send a discount coupon to loyal customers, you can enable the 'Block' condition for this purpose.
3. **Configure Journey Settings:** Once you are done with the journey actions, save the journey with the required settings like the name of the journey, whether you want to track conversion for the journey, etc.
4. **Publish Journey**: Once you are done with the configuration, you can publish the journey.

{% hint style="info" %}
**Feature Update!**

Journey Draft will not get **autosaved** every time you click on 'Save Changes' after completing each step when creating a journey.&#x20;
{% endhint %}

<figure><img src="/files/nbW7H4NO6fYMLJLezVBC" alt=""><figcaption><p>How to Create a Journey</p></figcaption></figure>

In this article, we will create a sample abandoned cart journey to better understand how basic journey creation works.

### Step 1: Navigate To Journey

1. Login to your Growlytics Dashboard.
2. From the sidebar, select Campaigns => Journeys. A Journey List page will open.
3. On the Journey List page, click on the 'Create Journey' button.

<figure><img src="/files/Eoc2cJnMt93K0emWLhtP" alt=""><figcaption><p>Navigate to Create Journey</p></figcaption></figure>

A new journey draft will be created and you will be prompted to use any existing templates for a quick start. You can select a suitable template or design your journey from scratch.

### Step 2: Set Journey Trigger

Determining when the journey will get triggered for a customer is very important. The event for this trigger can be specified and when the customer performs said event the designated journey will begin. In addition to specifying the event to start the journey, you can also enable event filters in case you want to run the journey only when the event's property values are matching.

Learn more about setting journey triggers here: [Journey Entry Points](/journeys-and-automation/journey-builder/journey-entry-points)

<figure><img src="/files/zbvuDGmsBqpaqsvmIxCw" alt=""><figcaption><p>Set Journey Trigger</p></figcaption></figure>

**Example:** For our [Abandoned Cart Example](/journeys-and-automation/journeys-basics/examples/usecase-abandoned-cart), the customer will be added to a journey when they add a product to their cart. In the above screenshot, the 'Add To Cart' event has been selected for the same.

### Step 3: Add Wait Block

After defining the entry point, you can add a 'Wait For Event' step. This step is used to wait for a given time period to track whether the customer is performing any activity in that time frame. Based on whether an activity is performed or not, we can take further actions.&#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/rbWpuZt8iNo3wYKYwOx5" alt=""><figcaption><p>Add Wait Block</p></figcaption></figure>

**Example:** For our abandoned cart journey, we will add the 'Wait For Event' step, and the event to wait for will be 'Purchased'. The 'Purchased, event represents a customer placing an order on your site. We will keep the wait time to 2 hours. If the customer makes a purchase within 2 hours, we will do nothing. But if the customer doesn't make a purchase we will send an email in the next step.

### Step 4: Add Action Block

After adding the Wait Block, we will add the Action Block, i.e., the 'Send Email' step. With this step, you can send an email to the customer containing details of the items in their abandoned cart.&#x20;

Learn more about sending messages in a journey: [Journey Action Steps](/journeys-and-automation/journey-builder/journey-action-steps)

<figure><img src="/files/5sdrk7HQ5rIAG5GGMr9J" alt=""><figcaption><p>Add Action Block</p></figcaption></figure>

### Step 5: Publish Journey

Now that all the steps of the journey have been configured, it is ready to be published. Before publishing the journey, you can also set configuration parameters like conversion tracking, restricting customers in segments, etc.

Once you have finalized the journey steps and journey campaign content, you can publish the journey. Please note, you **can not edit** a journey once it is **published**. So make sure, you thoroughly review the journey before you publish it.&#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/aZTKmyrLDbhNFd6olB93" alt=""><figcaption><p>Confirm Journey Setting &#x26; Publish Journey</p></figcaption></figure>

# Modify a Journey

This article will help you modify a journey.

Updating the journey is quite simple. Open the journey from the Journey List page. Depending on whether the journey is published or not, you can modify different parts of the journey. If the journey is in **draft mode** (not published), you can **modify** anything before publishing it. But once the journey is published, you will have limited options to modify it.

### Modify a Published Journey

In a published journey, while you can change [journey settings](/journeys-and-automation/journey-settings), you have limited options to change journey steps.

{% hint style="warning" %}
**You can not update the following on a published journey**

1. Add/remove steps to the journey.
2. Modify links between steps.
3. Change conversion tracking settings in a published journey.
   {% endhint %}

<figure><img src="/files/8Smdqnvf7VAksi4h5Hku" alt=""><figcaption><p>Modifying a Published Journey</p></figcaption></figure>

To edit a running journey, go to the Journey List on the Growlytics Dashboard and click on the journey that you want to edit. You will be redirected to the Journey Report page as shown in the screenshot below.

<figure><img src="/files/51T0Z7TcggLk67oCZ1tR" alt=""><figcaption><p>Edit Journey Steps</p></figcaption></figure>

On the Journey Report page, click on the 'Journey Steps' tab. You will see the journey steps as shown in the screenshot below.

<figure><img src="/files/axdvRnEKVevbNWxLEenN" alt=""><figcaption><p>Click on the campaign steps you want to edit</p></figcaption></figure>

When you click on the step, you will be asked to make changes and publish the step changes immediately.

<figure><img src="/files/TLlafBg8Dh8q1F86LFSE" alt=""><figcaption><p>Publish Changes</p></figcaption></figure>

{% hint style="info" %}
**Important**

Once you publish changes, it will take a few minutes for those changes to reflect.&#x20;
{% endhint %}

# Delete a Journey

This article will help you delete a journey.

You can delete journeys that are no longer needed. When you delete the journey, all the customers will be removed from the journey and no new customers will be added to the journey.

{% hint style="warning" %}
Delete the journey only when you are sure the journey is no longer needed. Growlytics will delete all journey-related information and you will not be able to revert the 'Delete Journey' action.
{% endhint %}

### When a Journey is deleted:

* All existing customers will be removed from the journey and no new customers will be added to the journey.
* You can not recover the deleted journey.

### How to Delete a Journey?

Follow these steps to suspend a journey.

1. Log into your Growlytics dashboard and navigate to the 'Journey Detail' page.
2. On the 'Journey Detail' page, you will see the red 'Delete Journey' button in the top right corner as shown in the screenshot below.
3. Click on the 'Delete Journey' button and confirm it to delete the journey.

<figure><img src="/files/BUilzgzq9hke9cmsgtIg" alt=""><figcaption><p>Delete Journey</p></figcaption></figure>

# Create a Duplicate Journey

This article will help you duplicate a journey.

Use the 'Journey Copy' feature to create an exact replica of the existing journey. Duplicates are created as drafts and don’t include analytical data from the existing journey.

### How to create a duplicate journey?

1. Login to your Growlytics Dashboard.
2. From the sidebar, select Journeys, and a Journey List page will open.
3. From the Journey List page, click on the journey you want to create a copy of. You will then be redirected to the Journey Details page.
4. On the Journey Details page, you will see an option to create a copy of the journey in the top right corner, as shown in the screenshot below.

<figure><img src="/files/Ce7d8fAD3gyxvMAzzD0N" alt=""><figcaption><p>Create Duplicate Journey</p></figcaption></figure>

# Journey Statuses

A Journey can be in one of four statuses: Draft, Running, Suspended, or Stopped.

<figure><img src="/files/p6an9twuJd2UCCAoKiNu" alt=""><figcaption><p>Journey Status</p></figcaption></figure>

### Draft Journey

On creation of the journey, it rests in the Draft status by default. This indicates that you are currently building and configuring the journey. Once you are done with journey building, you can switch from 'Draft' to 'Published' (or 'Running').

### Running Journey

Published journey also known as Running Journey, will accept customers into a journey, process them and send the required communication specified at each journey step.

Learn more about Running Journeys here: [Running Journey](/journeys-and-automation/journeys-basics/journey-statuses/running-journey)

### Suspended Journey

When a journey is no longer needed and you want to stop customers from entering a journey, you can suspend the journey. When the journey is suspended, no new customers will enter the journey however, existing customers in that journey will be processed.

Learn more about Suspended Journeys here: [Suspended Journey](/journeys-and-automation/journeys-basics/journey-statuses/suspended-journey)

### Stopped Journey

When a journey is no longer needed and you want to stop customers from entering a journey, you can pause the journey. When the journey is paused, no new customers will enter the journey however, existing customers in that journey will be processed.

Learn more about Stopped Journeys here: [Stop Journey](/journeys-and-automation/journeys-basics/journey-statuses/suspended-journey)

# Running Journey

On publishing (or running) a draft journey, new customers will be added and processed in that particular journey.&#x20;

{% hint style="warning" %}
**Limited Updates For Making Changes In a Published Journey.**

Once the journey is published, you will have limited options to modify the journey. So please ensure that you have built and tested the journey thoroughly before publishing.
{% endhint %}

### Running Journey Behavior

Once a journey is published:

* It will start adding and processing customers in the journey.
* It can not be changed back to Draft status.
* You can not add/remove new steps/step links in the journey.&#x20;
* You can change step configurations like campaign contents etc.
* You can change all the settings configured for the journey except for revenue tracking.

# UseCase - Abandoned Cart

In this article, we will create a sample 'Abandoned Cart' Journey to better understand how basic journey creation works.

### Abandoned Cart

In an online environment, cart abandonment is when customers add items to their shopping cart and exit the website without purchasing the items.

With the help of the Abandoned Cart event we can &#x20;

* Check the overview of the cart, and how many customers entered and exited.
* Check the channels through which 'Abandoned Cart' communications have been sent, e.g. email, WhatsApp, SMS, etc...

There are certain pre-requisites for building the flow:

1. 'Add to Cart' activity
2. 'Check Out' activity
3. 'Remove the Cart' activity.

Let's take a look at how to create an 'Abandoned Cart' Journey.

### Step 1: Navigate To Journey

1. Login to your Growlytics Dashboard.
2. From the sidebar, select Campaigns => Journeys. A Journey List page will open.
3. On the Journey List page, click on the 'Create Journey' button.

<figure><img src="/files/Eoc2cJnMt93K0emWLhtP" alt=""><figcaption><p>Navigate to Journey Draft</p></figcaption></figure>

A new journey draft will be created and you will be prompted to use any existing templates for a quick start. You can select a suitable template or design your journey from scratch. Here we will select the 'Abandoned Cart' Journey template.

<figure><img src="/files/qMuKyNWQxetfy3de1sPA" alt=""><figcaption><p>Select the Abandoned Cart Journey Template</p></figcaption></figure>

<figure><img src="/files/zbvuDGmsBqpaqsvmIxCw" alt=""><figcaption><p>Set Journey Trigger</p></figcaption></figure>

Customers will be added to the 'Abandoned Cart' Journey when they perform the 'Add to Cart' activity as shown above. &#x20;

### Step 3: Add Wait Block

After defining the entry point, you can add a 'Wait For Event' step. This step is used to wait for a given time period to track whether the customer is performing an activity in that time frame. Based on whether the activity is performed or not, we can take further action.&#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/rbWpuZt8iNo3wYKYwOx5" alt=""><figcaption><p>Add Wait Block</p></figcaption></figure>

Let's add the 'Wait For Event' step, and the event to wait for will be 'Purchased'. The 'Purchased' event represents a customer placing an order on your site. We will keep the wait time to 2 hours. If the customer makes a purchase within 2 hours, we will do nothing. But if the customer doesn't make a purchase we will send an email in the next step.

### Step 4: Add Action Block

After adding the Wait Block, we will add the Action Block, i.e., the 'Send Email' step. With this step, you can send an email to the customer containing details of the items in their abandoned cart.&#x20;

# UseCase - Purchase Thank You

In this article, we will create a sample 'Purchase Thank You' Journey to better understand how basic journey creation works.

### Purchase Thank You:

Journey also has an event to send a 'Thank You' message after the completion of an order through different channels like Email, SMS, WhatsApp, etc...

These are the steps to follow:

1. Entry Point of an event.
2. Wait for the time to trigger.
3. Check the past behavior of the customer's purchasing orders.

Let's take a look at how to create a 'Purchase Thank You' Journey.

### Step 1: Navigate To Journey

1. Login to your Growlytics Dashboard.
2. From the sidebar, select Campaigns => Journeys. A Journey List page will open.
3. On the Journey List page, click on the 'Create Journey' button.

<figure><img src="/files/Eoc2cJnMt93K0emWLhtP" alt=""><figcaption><p>Navigate to Journey Draft</p></figcaption></figure>

A new journey draft will be created and you will be prompted to use any existing templates for a quick start. You can select a suitable template or design your journey from scratch. Here we will select the 'Purchase Thank You' Template or create your own 'Purchase Thank You' Journey.

<figure><img src="/files/nbW7H4NO6fYMLJLezVBC" alt=""><figcaption><p>Creating a Purchase Thank You Journey</p></figcaption></figure>

<figure><img src="/files/maeAEFAtdsyza9QJtikn" alt=""><figcaption><p>Set Journey Trigger</p></figcaption></figure>

Customers will be added to the 'Purchase Thank You' Journey when they perform the 'Purchased' activity as shown above. &#x20;

### Step 3: Add Wait Block

After defining the entry point, you can add a 'Wait For Event' step. This step is used to wait for a given time period to track whether the customer is performing an activity in that time frame. Based on whether the activity is performed or not, we can take further action.&#x20;

After adding the Wait Block, we will add a Condition Block to determine which Action Block needs to be added. With this step, you can send a web push notification, an SMS, or an email to the customer with a 'Thank You for your Purchase' communication.&#x20;

# Journey Settings

This article describes the different journey settings available and how you can configure them.

<figure><img src="/files/jva7FdIvB5LI5Q4rp2wF" alt=""><figcaption><p>Journey Settings</p></figcaption></figure>

### Frequency Capping

Configure if you want to follow frequency capping for this journey's campaigns or not. You can set frequency capping for promotional campaign messages, and for transactional campaign messages, you can ignore frequency capping.

For example, for 'Abandoned Cart' journeys, you can enable frequency capping. But for the 'Ask for Review' journey, you can disable frequency capping.

Know more about Frequency Capping: [Frequency Capping](/account-settings/campaign-settings/setting-up-frequency-capping)

### Revenue Tracking

Decide if you want to track revenue for this journey or not. This part is very important since Growlytics, by default, activities performed by customers in response to the last campaign message.&#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/azqAPRbFS39BoJbB3P1M" alt=""><figcaption><p>Revenue Tracking is automatically selected for every journey</p></figcaption></figure>

If the last message is of a 'Non-Follow-Up' Journey, your conversion tracking for other campaigns/journeys will not behave properly. For example, you don't need to enable revenue tracking for a 'Purchase Thank You' Journey.&#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/LQcrYJKBhqFbHIHjKX2U" alt=""><figcaption><p>No need to enable revenue tracking for 'Non Follow-Up' journey</p></figcaption></figure>

### Entry Audience Filters

Set conditions for the customer to enter the journey. This is useful when you are targeting customers of a particular segment.

For example, you have set up a campaign where if the customer has not purchased anything in the last 45 days, they receive an email. However, in this particular journey, you don't want to include a customer who has canceled orders, in the journey. For such a scenario, you can apply a filter of 'Not performed Order Cancelled in the last 45 days'.

### Exit Criteria

Use Journey Exit Criteria to remove customers from journeys who no longer fit the journey's goal or for whom the journey's content is no longer relevant. This will help make the statistics more meaningful.

<figure><img src="/files/WeCrueV16fJ5yRIs6Yj4" alt=""><figcaption><p>Exit Criteria</p></figcaption></figure>

#### Exit Criteria Use Cases:

* In the 'Abandoned Cart' journey, when a customer makes a purchase, remove the customer from the journey.
* You have a journey to ask for a review after 15 days. But if the customer has already given a review after 2 days, remove the customer from the journey.
* You have a retention journey to ask for a purchase after 45 days. But if the customer has already made a purchase after 45 days, remove the customer from the journey.

#### How to set the exit criteria?

There are two ways to set exit criteria:

1. **When an event is performed by the customer:** Use this option to remove a customer from a journey when he performs any event. For example, in the 'Abandoned Cart' Journey, you can set the 'Purchase' event as an exit criterion. This means whenever a customer makes a purchase, he will be removed from the journey and will no longer receive 'Cart Follow-Up' messages.
2. **When a customer becomes part of a segment:** Use this option to remove a customer from a journey when he becomes part of the segment.

#### Exit Criteria Considerations

* Customers that are removed via exit criteria are logged, at each step of a journey. This will help you identify how many customers were removed using the Exit Criteria.&#x20;

# Using time slots in journey

Timing is everything! The right notification, to the right customer, and at the right is the magic equation you should aim for.&#x20;

With Growlytics you can decide the time after which each step of the journey will get activated for the customer.&#x20;

Watch this quick tutorial to see how to set a 'Wait for Event' criteria in a customer journey.      &#x20;

{% embed url="<https://youtu.be/vihrK_t0a2A>" %}
Add 'Wait for Time' Criteria
{% endembed %}

Let us take a look at how to set a ‘Wait for Time’ Criteria while creating a Journey.

Add a ‘Wait for Time’ block, link it to the 'Custom Entry Event' block, and ‘Click to edit’. This option helps specify the time period after which, the next steps of the journey get activated for the customer. There are three options to choose from:

<figure><img src="/files/V69Vif5tndsUgBFQVDBW" alt=""><figcaption><p>Add 'Wait for Time' Block</p></figcaption></figure>

* **Option 1 'Wait for Some Time' -** This option helps specify the number of minutes, hours, or days after which the next step in the journey gets activated. For example, set a criteria where a customer will receive a 'Thank You' message, two hours after performing a 'Purchase' event. &#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/MSvb55hY11E73Zvs0UAZ" alt=""><figcaption><p>Wait for Some Time</p></figcaption></figure>

* **Option 2 'Wait for Day of Week'** - This option allows you to specify the day of the week after which the next step in the journey will get activated between a specific time slot. You can also select multiple days in the week after which the next step in the journey will get activated. Based on the time of the Customer’s entry into the journey, the earliest weekday matched will be considered. For example, the journey has been set to continue after every Monday and Thursday of the week between the same time slot of 10:00 AM  to 07:00 PM, but the customer made a purchase on Friday. In this case, he will receive the Thank You message on Monday since it is the closest match.&#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/YGdIChogrxy0WRXlBVZ2" alt=""><figcaption><p>Wait for Day of the Week,</p></figcaption></figure>

* **Option 3 'Wait for Day of Month'** - This option enables you to specify the date of the month after which the next step in the journey will get activated. Select the time slot as required. You can also select multiple dates in the month, after which the next step in the journey will get activated. Based on the time of the Customer’s entry into the journey, the earliest date matched will be considered. For example, your customers shouldn't miss out on the Month End Bonanza, but the notification shouldn't go out too early either. In such cases you can use this option to trigger the Month End Bonanza notifications to reach your customer on the 25th of every month between 02:00 PM and 08:00 PM.

<figure><img src="/files/fZRwDeSk7W20MWxVzUzo" alt=""><figcaption><p>Wait for Day of Month</p></figcaption></figure>

{% hint style="info" %}
**Pro tip!** Use this advanced setting option to your advantage. The **‘Wait for Time Slot’** option enables you to select a particular time slot during which your customers will be prompted to go ahead with the next steps in the journey. Click on the drop-down, to select the 'Slot Start Time' and 'Slot End Time'.&#x20;

For example, there is a customer who is twelve hours behind your local time zone and notifications shouldn't reach them at odd hours. Use this option to set a time slot that matches their time zone, with a 'SLowt Start Time' as 08:30 PM and 'Slot End Time' as 09:30 PM. By doing this, any notification that is sent out will get triggered at that particular time slot for that particular customer. Thus ensuring that your customer is not disturbed!&#x20;
{% endhint %}

<figure><img src="/files/QJAzOL85Jec0xcJCVXuS" alt=""><figcaption><p>Wait for Time Slot</p></figcaption></figure>

Based on the criteria set, the journey steps will get activated for the customer. <br>

Click on ‘Save Changes’ to save your draft and continue building your journey.&#x20;

# Journey Builder

Journey Builder is a campaign planning tool with the help of you which you can design and automate campaigns. This will guide customers through their journey with your brand.&#x20;

A Journey is the foundation on which your campaign is built and consists of two main types of components:

1. Steps
2. Connections

### Journey Steps

A journey is a combination of steps connected with each other as shown in the screenshot below. The customer navigates from one step to another based on the criteria of the condition.

<figure><img src="/files/Y7k4JURgbtr9s5G0XyJR" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

### Journey Connections

The actions that connect the steps in a journey are called Journey connections. As shown below, there are various Journey Connections, like, Event Triggered, After Wait, After Send, etc. &#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/5F910RXxdFFnlti0QFEA" alt=""><figcaption><p>Journey Connections</p></figcaption></figure>

# Journey Entry Points

Click on ‘Save Changes’ to save your draft to move on to the next step in creating the journey.&#x20;

# Journey Action Steps

Journey action steps are custom actions that you can create to trigger each step of the journey.  Each step will have a set of journey actions that can be used to trigger each step.&#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/waVbXlm5ZopEydXVT4t4" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

For example, the action 'Event Triggered' is used, as the name states, to trigger a Journey. This can either lead to a 'Wait for Event' or directly lead to a send communication - either SMS, Email, or WhatsApp. Each of these events will also have a menu of Journey actions Steps that can easily be used to create and complete your journey.&#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/Bw1qqpNA2KwchUUzUqZr" alt=""><figcaption><p>Journey Action Steps</p></figcaption></figure>

# Journey Condition Steps

Journey Conditions enable you to target a particular section of your customer base depending on the end goal of your campaign. There are three condition blocks to choose from.&#x20;

1. **Past Behavior:** Determine which customer will proceed with the next steps of the journey based on their past behavior, that is, user attributes, events performed, and events not performed.
2. **Is in Segment:** Applying this condition will ensure that customers belonging to a specific segment will proceed with the next steps in the journey.
3. **Is Reachable:** This condition block will help identify which platforms, such as email, Mobile Push, Web Push, SMS, WhatsApp, or in-app, your customers are available on and send communications accordingly.&#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/wsPtE5n808iDvlBLwjBY" alt=""><figcaption><p>Types of Condition Blocks</p></figcaption></figure>

Watch this quick tutorial to see how to apply a condition block in between a journey.&#x20;

{% embed url="<https://youtu.be/fXpfi-kG9i4>" %}
Apply a Condition between Journey Steps
{% endembed %}

Let's take a closer look at the various setting available in each condition block.&#x20;

### Past Behavior

Add a **‘Past Behavior’** block, link it to the 'Custome Entry Event' block, and ‘Click to edit’. With this option, you can filter out customers based on their past behavior and accordingly get them to proceed with the journey. There are three behavior filters.&#x20;

1. User Attribute
2. Performed Event
3. Not Performed Event&#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/9BFyq04q1tTyLAWwvyJT" alt=""><figcaption><p>Past Behavior - Behavior Filters</p></figcaption></figure>

Here is how you can use these three filters optimally, with the help of an example.&#x20;

You have a site-wide sale where all your products are available at 50% off and you want to send the first notification to your returning customers who have made two or more purchases. To do this,&#x20;

* Click on ‘User Attribute’,&#x20;
* Select property as ‘Total Orders’,
* Set the condition as ‘Greater than or equal to’,
* Enter ‘2’ as the value.

<figure><img src="/files/GLp5lqhE7NgZwLiu65E1" alt=""><figcaption><p>User Attribute</p></figcaption></figure>

Next, we will add one more filter to send this announcement specifically to those customers who have looked at products worth ₹ 3,000 and more, at least 5 times, in the last thirty days. To do this,&#x20;

* Click on ‘Performed Event’,
* Select event performed as ‘Product Viewed’
* Set the condition as ‘Greater than or equal to’,&#x20;
* Enter ‘5’ as the value,
* Set the time period to ‘last 30 days’,
* Click on ‘Add product viewed condition’
* Select the property as ‘Price’,
* Set the condition as ‘Greater than or equal to’,
* Enter ‘3000’ as the value.&#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/MyJqY0Sd0JHQtnKVXbp0" alt=""><figcaption><p>Performed Event</p></figcaption></figure>

Further, we would like to filter out those customers who have viewed the product but did not purchase it in the last 30 days. To do this,&#x20;

* Click on ‘Not Performed Event’,
* Select event not performed as ‘Purchased’,
* Set the time period to ‘last 30 days’,
* Click on ‘Add Purchased Condition’,
* Select the property as ‘Amount’,&#x20;
* Set the condition as ‘Greater than or equal to’,
* Enter ‘3000’ as the value.&#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/nkWBowvN7KKqnyf0aGub" alt=""><figcaption><p>Not Performed Event</p></figcaption></figure>

Now that all the required filters have been applied, give a Behavior Description ‘Product Viewed, Not Purchased’. This description will be visible on the ‘Past Behavior’ condition Block in the Journey Steps.&#x20;

Click on ‘Save Changes’ and proceed further.&#x20;

If the ‘Past Behavior’ Condition is not met, send out an email to the customers notifying them about the ‘Sale’. Add an ‘Email’ engagement block and link it to the ‘Past Behavior’ condition block by clicking on ‘No’.&#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/LDxmdh7CJH3c3u2jcw9k" alt=""><figcaption><p>Is in Segment</p></figcaption></figure>

### Is in Segment

If the ‘Past Behavior’ Condition is met, we will add another condition, that is, **‘Is in Segment’**. Link this block by clicking on ‘Yes’.&#x20;

Click to edit.&#x20;

Select the segment from the dropdown, for this example, we will choose ‘Not purchase last three month’.

Click on ‘Save Changes’ and proceed further.&#x20;

If the ‘Is in Segment’ condition is not met we will send out an SMS to the customer notifying them about the Sale.&#x20;

Add an SMS engagement block and link it to the ‘Is in Segment’ condition block by clicking on ‘No’.&#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/ZwvxjDjlJv3jEa5hY4rX" alt=""><figcaption><p>Is Reachable</p></figcaption></figure>

### Is Reachable

If the ‘Is in Segment’ condition is met, we will add the last and final condition, which is, **‘Is Reachable’**. Link this block by clicking on ‘Yes’.&#x20;

Click to edit.&#x20;

To check where the user is available, click on the drop-down and click on email for this particular scenario.&#x20;

Click on ‘Save Changes’ and proceed further.&#x20;

If the user is not reachable by email we will send a WhatsApp message to the customer notifying them about the Sale.

Add a WhatsApp engagement block and link it to the ‘Is Reachable’ condition block by clicking on ‘No’.&#x20;

If the user is reachable by email we will send an email to the customer notifying them about the ‘Sale’.&#x20;

Add an Email engagement block and link it to the ‘Is Reachable’ condition block by clicking on ‘Yes’.&#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/903yPoeFUiuLWyIgN9SC" alt=""><figcaption><p>Applying Conditions between Juorney Steps</p></figcaption></figure>

There you have it, you have successfully applied conditions in between your journey steps.&#x20;

# Updating Customer Attributes in Journey

The Attribute Update journey step allows you to create, modify, or remove a customer’s attribute as they move through the journey.

A few common use cases for the Attribute Update step in the journey are:

a. Setting a customer’s next birthday, for birthday campaigns

b. Setting the interest of a customer based on the products he is purchasing.

c. Save customer's feedback and review from third-party platforms like [judge.me](https://judge.me/)

d. Save your customer's loyalty points with third-party platforms like [smile.io](https://smile.io/)

…and we’re sure there are more we haven’t uncovered yet!

**How to update customer attributes in Journey?**

It is quite easy. You just need to drag-drop the 'Set User Attribute' step in Journey and mention the attribute to update in that step. You can mention the attribute to update and the value to set/increase/decrease.

<figure><img src="/files/ifvaYecVP3vxIR0v1ZXr" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

### And that’s it!

Save your 'Update User Attribute' action, and continue setting up your journey! If you’ve found a cool use case for the attribute action or you need some help setting it up, just get in touch with our support team via the dashboard chat and we’ll be happy to help.

**Few notes on updating customer attributes:**

1. For numbers, you can increase/decrease the current value. If no value is found, it will consider 0 as the current value. For example, you have set the attribute update to increase the value by 5, if no value is present it will consider 0 and increase that value by 5 and save.
2. For Date attribute update you have 4 options to modify the attribute:

   i. Set to a specific time: Input the time, you want to update to.

   ii. Set to a current time: Set to the journey time (When the user will be processed in the journey).

   iii. Increase existing time: Increase time mentioned in the attribute by specific minutes, hours, etc.

   iv. Decrease existing time: Decrease time mentioned in the attribute by specific minutes, hours, etc.

# Analyze Journey Reports

# Campaigns Overview

A campaign is a one-time send to a pre-established target group of customers — like sending festival discounts, regular newsletters, sale announcements, or promotional sends. A campaign can be created and sent immediately, or it can be scheduled to be sent at a later time.

### Creating Campaigns&#x20;

Creating a campaign is a 5 step process.

<figure><img src="/files/xnqG6JomQij0tf8m75D7" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

### Step 1: Basic Campaign Information

Fill in the basic information for your campaign.

1. **Campaign Name:** Give your campaign a name to refer to later.
2. **Campaign Start Time:** Specify when you want to send campaign messages. You can set it up immediately or schedule it for a later time.
3. **Frequency Capping:** Enable/disable frequency capping for the campaign. When enabled, the campaign message will not be sent to the customer if frequency capping has been exceeded. Learn more about frequency capping: [Frequency Capping](/account-settings/campaign-settings/setting-up-frequency-capping)
4. **UTM Tracking:** Set UTM tracking parameters, all the links mentioned in the email will be modified with the UTM parameters mentioned.

<figure><img src="/files/a7gMnkSQpblsYZ040EgQ" alt=""><figcaption><p>Basic Campaign Information</p></figcaption></figure>

### Step 2: Target Audience

Specify the group of customers who will receive the campaign messages. There are 3 options to specify here:

1. *All Customers:* With this option, all the customers present in Growlytics will receive campaign messages.
2. *Segment:* Customers present in the Segment specified will receive campaign messages.
3. *Custom Segment:* Target a specific set of customers without creating a segment for them.
4. *Static List:* Customers present in the specified static list (.csv list) will receive campaign messages.

<figure><img src="/files/ctFBd6WMsGBkwhU5YuoY" alt=""><figcaption><p>Target Audience</p></figcaption></figure>

### Step 3: Campaign Message

Depending on the messaging channel, specify campaign contents here. Please refer to channel-specific campaign creation guidelines for this step.

### Step 4: Conversion Tracking

When creating a campaign always keep in mind to set up a conversion goal. This will enable you to measure the effectiveness of your campaign and thereby filter out customers in the follow-up campaigns or messages.&#x20;

Set up an exit criteria, this determines with a customer exits your campaign. This will also specify whether the customer should continue to receive all the messages in the campaign when they match the conversion goal or don't match your trigger criteria anymore.&#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/qLaqgyC7gIdDojrphtbz" alt=""><figcaption><p>Conversion Tracking</p></figcaption></figure>

### Step 5: Review & Launch&#x20;

This is the final step of publishing the campaign. You can review the details specified at each campaign step and you can launch the campaign.

### **Campaign Summary**:

The campaign summary shows us&#x20;

1. How many campaigns have been created
2. The different channels through which the campaigns are running - Email, SMS, WhatsApp, Web Push, Mobile Push, etc.

# Ideal image sizes

The image sizes vary depending on your targeting. Here are the ideal image sizes as well as aspect ratios for mobile and desktop targeting.

**For Desktop** - The image should be at least 360px (width) by 180px (height) with an aspect ratio of 2:1

**For Mobile** - The image should be at least 720px (width) by 240px (height) with an aspect ratio of 3:1

Larger images will be downsized and smaller images will be stretched depending on the size of the container.\
\
For targeting Mobile and desktop users with different images within the same campaign, we recommend creating different locales for mobile and desktop users. Now, while setting up the web campaigns you would get options to use different images for each locale that you have set up.

For example, You can set up a locale with "Web Push Subscription Status is True AND Device Type is "Mobile" as a locale for your Mobile users and while creating the campaign choose an image with a 3:1 aspect ratio within the message for the created locale.

# Using Short Links in Whatsapp Campaign

This article describes how Growlytics uses short links for tracking click rates for whatsapp and SMS campaigns.

## Adding short links for template approval

While submitting WhatsApp templates for approval, it is mandatory to add the Growlytics short link if the template contains CTAs/Buttons.

Growlytics uses the URL [https://i.gltcs.in](https://i.gltcs.in/)/\<short-code> as its short link domain.

So while submitting the template for approval, the dynamic link URL for the CTAs/BUTTONS should be replaced with [https://i.gltcs.in](https://i.gltcs.in/)

For Example : If the default dynamic link is <https://abc.com/xyz>, it should be replaced as [https://i.gltcs.in/{{1}}](https://i.gltcs.in/)

### Adding short links in Growlytics <a href="#h_ea437d6510" id="h_ea437d6510"></a>

Once the template is approved, you can follow the steps mentioned below for adding the links to the actual campaign in Growlytics.

1. After adding the content body to the WhatsApp editor, below you will see the option to add the button links.
2. Here you cannot add the button link directly as this will lead to an error with a double domain link.
3. For Example, If we add the link <https://abc.com/xyz> then the button will lead to an invalid link <https://i.gltcs.in/https://abc.com/xyz>
4. To avoid this, click on create short link button, paste the actual link and then select the option only generate shortcode, without domain name in the URL as shown in the screenshot below

<figure><img src="https://downloads.intercomcdn.com/i/o/565944288/5d9ebf61e1b7e8331a213971/image.png" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

Click on create a short link, a code will appear as shown in the screenshot below, copy this code and add it to the Button link placeholder. This code will have the actual link that is <https://abc.com/xyz>

<figure><img src="https://downloads.intercomcdn.com/i/o/565947020/aaa25e4aa762cf83dece4bad/image.png" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

Now save the draft and do a "Send Test", the actual message that you will receive will contain the button with the actual link.

# WhatsApp Chat Custom Reply

Don't leave your customers waiting for someone to respond to their queries.

Customers across the globe are increasingly turning to platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and other such apps to connect with their friends, family, and colleagues. It is natural for customers to expect a similar experience when it comes to communicating with brands. They prefer real-time responses instead of waiting for agent responses or passive communication over emails.&#x20;

A WhatsApp chat custom reply can help you respond to your customers' queries in real-time. You can now provide the speed the customers expect through automations.&#x20;

To get started with setting up and automating your WhatsApp Chat Custom Reply you can follow these steps or watch this quick tutorial.&#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/l61SlCJOPUJguY0TNaMV" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

1. Log in to your Growlytics Dashboard.
2. Navigate to the 'Conversations' tab from the menu bar on the left.
3. Select the 'Automations' tab on the menu bar on the left.&#x20;
4. Click on 'Add New Custom Reply' on the top right corner of the page.
5. In the popup that opens
   1. Enter the name of your Custom Auto Reply, for example, "Order Shipment Status"
   2. Add the customer input for which you want the Custom Auto Reply to be triggered. For example, "Where is my order?", and "Is my order dispatched?" will be the two variables we will enter. You can enter up to 5 variables for each automation. When a customer types in any one of them, the auto-response will get triggered.  &#x20;
   3. Enter the type of Auto-reply you would want to trigger when a customer sends in any one of the variations in the chat. For example, "Your order is confirmed and on its way 🚚. Here is the link to track your order \[order URL]"
   4. Click on 'Create Custom Reply'

You have successfully created a WhatsApp Chat Custom Auto Reply.&#x20;

You can always go back and edit Name, Customer Input, or Custom Auto Reply and click on 'Save Changes'.&#x20;

Now when a customer opens their WhatsApp chat with your brand and types in a response that matches the entries you have made for your WhatsApp Custom Auto Replies, the response to their query will automatically get triggered.&#x20;

# WhatsApp Cart Summary

Add a variable to WhatsApp messages for Abandoned Cart automations. This allows you to include a comprehensive Cart Summary in your communication with customers. This improvement is significant compared to the previous version, which only allowed you to share information about a single product in the customer's abandoned cart.

With the Cart Summary feature, you can now provide customers with a complete overview of all the products they have added to their cart. This includes details such as product names, quantities, prices, and any applicable discounts. By offering this detailed summary, you can enhance the customer experience and increase the chances of them completing their purchase.&#x20;

Utilize this feature effectively in two simple steps:

1. Add a WhatsApp block to your automation.&#x20;
2. Edit the block and set up a variable within your automation system that can store the cart information. This variable will serve as a container for all the products in the customer's cart.

<figure><img src="/files/fpn5mdpuEERinfxM6whH" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

You can now leverage the Cart Summary feature in your Abandoned Cart automations to provide customers with a comprehensive overview of the products in their cart. This upgrade enhances the effectiveness of your communication strategy and improves the likelihood of customer conversions.

* You can pass data to any third-party analytics system.

## How does it work?

To send the connector campaign, you will need to provide HTTP endpoint details in the campaign content step as shown in the screenshot below.

<figure><img src="/files/fc2ANpF8hQWDprZsx7gt" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

# Forms and Pop-Ups

The essence of pop-up forms lies in their ability to pop up on the page as scheduled, offering an opportunity to capture leads at the perfect moment. By carefully selecting the timing and placement, these forms are designed to optimize conversion rates and guide more leads through the sales funnel. Conversely, online forms, or embedded forms, are permanently located on your website, serving a specific purpose. Depending on your objectives and the most effective approach, they are typically placed in the header, footer, or on a dedicated landing page.

# Coupon Codes

This article will help you generate and send coupon codes on Growlytics

Behavior-based dynamic coupons are a great way to bring your customers back if they have gone inactive and haven't returned recently or to convert visitors who are subscribing to your newsletters.

Watch this quick tutorial to learn how to generate and send coupon codes.&#x20;

{% embed url="<https://youtu.be/jAnQYazxCrQ>" %}

Scenarios where dynamic coupons can use useful:

1. **Abandoned cart:** Send a discount coupon to customers who have abandoned their cart and are first-time purchasers — send a coupon code that is active only for one day to create a sense of urgency and help convert first-time visitors into paying customers.
2. **Winback lost customers:** Send a discount to buyers who haven't come back recently, incentivizing them to purchase again.
3. **Welcome series:** Give new subscribers a discount code as soon as they join your email list and maybe don't make any purchases in a month.

## What kind of coupons can be generated? <a href="#h_f321b71419" id="h_f321b71419"></a>

* You can create a **fixed amount** discount coupon on the entire order based on items in the cart or the minimum order amount.
* You can create a discount **percentage** coupon for specific or all items in the cart based on the minimum order amount.
* You can provide **free shipping** discount coupons on specific or all items in the cart based on the minimum order amount or shipping price.
* You can set the expiry time for those coupons to a number of hours or days.
* Coupons generated from Growlytics are unique for each customer, you don't need to worry about misuse of the coupon codes being shared since the coupon code will be valid only for those customers to whom the coupon has been sent.&#x20;

## Generate Coupon From Growlytics Dashboard <a href="#h_c59f4c25d5" id="h_c59f4c25d5"></a>

To generate a coupon, please follow the below steps:

1. Log in to the Growlytics dashboard and click on 'Coupons' from the side menu.
2. You will be redirected to the coupon list page. Click on the 'Create Coupon' button at the top right corner. You will be redirected to the 'Create Coupon' page as shown below.

<figure><img src="/files/MkEVMGGNnt2fuPnPdTm0" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

3. Enter the name of the coupon for your reference.
4. Enter any coupon prefix if you want. The coupon prefix contains letters and numbers. Coupon codes will be generated by adding 8 random letters and numbers at the end of your prefix. If you don't specify a prefix, it will be just the 8 random letters and numbers.
5. Select coupon usage limit. Specify whether you want to allow the same customer to use the coupon once or multiple times.&#x20;
6. Select expiry time. Determine the number of hours or days after which the coupon will expire once it is generated for that customer.
7. Select discount type, from any one of the following:
   1. Fixed Amount: Use this option if you want to give a fixed amount of discount on the order amount.
   2. Percentage: Use this option if you want to provide a discount in percentage. You can give a percentage discount on specific products or collections or an entire order.
   3. Free Shipping: Use this option if you want to provide free shipping
8. Minimum Order Value: Set the minimum order amount required for coupons to be applicable.

## Using coupons inside the Email <a href="#h_de1fd0d4db" id="h_de1fd0d4db"></a>

Once you've created a coupon from Growlytics, you can send them by email using one of the following ways:

1. **Using a coupon code block**

   You can use the coupon code block as shown below to send coupon codes using email. This is the easiest way. You just need to select which coupon you want to send from the options and you are good to go.

   There are also many theme options available if you want to personalize the block according to your branding guidelines. If you are sending bulk emails, you can generate coupons manually from your store and put a bulk coupon as well as.

<figure><img src="/files/1URqjB8iCy3NGKWHBo2Q" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

2. **Using a coupon placeholder**

   You can use the coupon code placeholder to mention the coupon code as a text anywhere inside the email. **{{coupon\[Name-Of-Coupon]\[Coupon Code]|default:''}}**

<figure><img src="/files/p2tsv1FrSuJsvCs176OI" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

## Using coupons inside SMS, Web-push & other channels <a href="#h_a0c00c7323" id="h_a0c00c7323"></a>

You can mention coupon code and expiry time just like you set user attributes inside campaign messages by adding a coupon placeholder.

# Conversion Tracking

For each message being sent from Growlytics via a campaign or journey, Growlytics automatically tracks conversions. This allows you to analyze the performance of your owned marketing channels across your account. In this article, you will learn what conversion tracking entails, and how to set up conversion tracking according to your requirements.

## How Conversions are Attributed to a Campaign?

A user may receive several campaigns through multiple channels, each nudging them to perform a similar action. Attributing conversions to a particular campaign can be tricky in such situations as each user can interact with multiple campaigns before they decide to make a purchase.

By default Deepest-Latest attribution model is set for attribution tracking, to change this setting, you can reach out to our support team via the dashboard chat option or contact your account manager.

## Deepest - Latest Attribution Model (Recommended) <a href="#h_29cf6e7691" id="h_29cf6e7691"></a>

A two-step conversion attribution model, that helps attribute the conversion of each user to the right campaign. In this model, the last campaign with the deepest engagement will be attributed to the campaigns.

With this model, all the campaigns sent to customers are considered if they are within tracking the deadline. The last campaign among these will be attributed with the deepest engagement.

Deepest engagement means that customers who have done the last click/open will get more priority than the campaigns without any actions. Let's take a few use cases to understand this.

1. Use Case 1: User Receives 2 Campaigns with Same Conversion Event, Clicks on Both:
   * Let's assume that a user was sent an Email and an SMS on the same day (April 12), encouraging them to purchase products in their cart.
   * *Conversion Deadline* of 3 Days (April 15).
   * The user clicks on both campaigns and makes a purchase the next day (April 13).
   * Here's what the date-time stamps of the campaigns reveal:
     * Email Campaign: Clicked on April 13, 11:40 AM
     * SMS Campaign: Clicked on April 13, 8:45 PM
   * Hence, *Conversion* will be attributed to the *SMS.*
2. ### Use Case 2: User Receives 2 Campaigns with Same Conversion Event, Interacts with Neither <a href="#h_0856865624" id="h_0856865624"></a>
   1. Let's assume a case where a user is sent 2 Emails in a day.
   2. Conversion Deadline of 12 Hours.
   3. The user interacts with neither but he places the order the same day.
   4. Here's what the date-time stamps of the campaigns reveal:
      * *Email 1:* Sent at 9 am
      * *Email 2:* Sent at 3 pm
      * *Order placed* by the user at 7 pm
   5. Thus, *Conversion* will be attributed to the last sent Email 2.
3. ### Use Case 3: User Receives 2 campaigns, clicks on 1st campaign but doesn't interact with the second campaign sent after a few hours <a href="#h_d6b7425ea6" id="h_d6b7425ea6"></a>
   * Let's assume that a user was sent 2 campaigns in succession.
   * Conversion Deadline of 7 days.
   * Here's how they interacted with each campaign, within the conversion deadline:
     * Campaign 1: Clicks
       * Send date - April 2
       * Clicked on - April 2
       * Conversion deadline - 7 days (which means campaign events to attribute conversions to this campaign will be tracked till April 8.)
     * Campaign 2: Opens
       * Send date - April 4
       * Viewed on - April 5
       * Conversion deadline - 7 days (which means campaign events to attribute conversions to this campaign will be tracked till April 10.)
     * Campaign 3: Views
       * Send date - April 6
       * Viewed on - April 7
       * Conversion deadline - 7 days (which means campaign events to attribute conversions to this campaign will be tracked till April 12.)
   * The user purchased a subscription on April 8.
   * Which campaign is attributed to the conversion? As per the deepest-latest conversion attribution model:
     * Campaign 1 recorded the deepest interaction - *Clicks*
     * Campaign 3 recorded the latest interaction - *View* on April 7.
   * Thus, Conversion will be attributed to Campaign 1 as *Clicks* is given the highest priority

## Last Open/Click Attribution Model <a href="#h_548614a139" id="h_548614a139"></a>

With this attribution model, if your customer has shown a specific activity with your marketing message(opened/clicked) and then places the order in your store, we attribute that sale to the last message your customer received. What is essential to know about the logic we apply is that:

* there is a single attribution window for both Campaigns and Automations, across all channels;
* an engagement with a marketing message is recorded when the Email message or Push Notification is opened, an SMS message is clicked;
* the attribution window count starts after the customer shows engagement (opens or clicks);
* the sale is attributed to the last message your customer has interacted with and only in case it falls in the attribution window domain;

Let's say that your Campaign is sent on January 1st. The attribution window is set to 5 days. The customer opens this Email Campaign on January 3rd. In that case, any order between January 3rd and January 8th will be attributed to the Email Campaign sent on January 1st, unless the customer opened another email within the attribution period. In that case, this sale will be attributed to the last email opened.

## Why Growlytics chooses the above methods? <a href="#h_927ee50428" id="h_927ee50428"></a>

Based on our experience, this method has a severe advantage over others due to a variety of reasons:

* We are not losing any sales because of the cross-device and cross-channel communication. If the customer opens the message on his phone and then places the order via desktop, our attribution won't fail, as it would with cookies or pixels. This method is also not vulnerable to the incognito window of the browser.
* you may adjust the attribution according to your business average. If you see that most of the opens happen within the first 24-48 hours, you may leverage the tracking according to this number if it takes a little longer you may specify that number.

Note, since Growlytics is transferring to this method over the tracking by cookies, which was losing a vast number of sales due to the mentioned limitation, you may see a considerable increase in sales attributed to Growlytics.

## Why is there a discrepancy with other services? <a href="#h_a6277c2e0e" id="h_a6277c2e0e"></a>

The answer to this question is straightforward - each of the services chooses its own way to attribute your sales. It is always hard to say what was the final drop that made your customer purchase. Whether it was enough to see your advert somewhere on Facebook or to see the email message in the inbox? Of course, it would be better to compare the information collected with different services and look at the average. However, at Growlytics, we believe that cross-device tracking is crucial in today’s super-connected world.

While the mobile plays an essential part in our buying habits, particularly in the research/consideration process, the actual conversion may happen on the laptop when you have more time for consideration. According to Facebook, more than 65% of conversions start on one device and are completed on another. So with this in mind, Growlytics reporting is going to be more representative of the conversions you get from your Growlyticscampaigns.

## FAQs <a href="#h_29a3e059ad" id="h_29a3e059ad"></a>

**If I send a Campaign and Automation workflow was triggered, where would my sale be attributed?** If your customer has opened both of the emails, the order placed within the attribution window will be assigned to the last email opened/clicked.

**Will you attribute orders based on the discounts provided in the message?** No, the attribution logic, doesn't check the source of the Discount code.

**What happens with the attribution in case the Campaign is clicked twice or more?** Only the first open or click can affect attribution.

Using the System ID, you can track and update data for given customers across multiple devices and websites, providing you with a 360° view of the customer. The activities tab shows all the events and event attributes, performed by the customer, and sorted by the event reported time.

# Delete customer

### How Deleting customers works in Growlytics:

You can archive customer profiles instead of deleting customer profiles. When you archive customers, Growlytics removes all the identifiable information about the customers like email, mobile, name, etc. Such a customer will be considered an anonymous customer.

This way, you will be able to archive customers and still have all the activity history in place.

**How to archive your customers?**\
To archive customers, you can follow the steps given below:

1. Login to your Growlytics account.
2. Click on Customers from the Menu on the left side.
3. Filter and click on the customer that you want to archive.
4. You will be redirected to the Customer Details page. At the top right corner of the Customer Details page, you will see the Settings icon. Click on the Settings icon and click on the 'Archive Customers' button.
5. You will need to confirm the archiving of the customer.
6. Once you archive the customer, the customer profile will be refreshed and you will see that the registered customer has been converted to an anonymous customer.

# Customer Attributes

Customer attributes are data points that describe your customer - who is your customer, their location, occupation, and a lot more depending on your business. Such detailed customer data helps you segment your customers into relevant segments and use multiple channels of engagement to communicate with your customers.&#x20;

We have two categories of customer attributes:

1. [System Attributes](/customers-and-segments/customer-profile/customer-attributes/system-attributes): These are attributes pre-defined by Growlytics and are tracked for all users post-integration, by default.&#x20;
2. [Custom Attributes](/customers-and-segments/customer-profile/customer-attributes/custom-attributes): These attributes are defined by you for each platform and can be tracked through the respective SDKs.&#x20;

# System Attributes

# Custom Attributes

Custom Attributes are those specific data points that you define and track for all your customers. These attributes enable you to identify your customers' preferences with respect to your business and provide them with personalized experiences in real-time. &#x20;

Based on your industry and requirement, these attributes can be:&#x20;

* Shopify customer
* Total spends on your website&#x20;
* Customer Lifetime Value
* Average order amount, etc.

### Adding a Custom Attribute

Here is how you can create and add a Custom Attribute&#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/jk1tXn45NWKgPPp49fnR" alt=""><figcaption><p>Adding a Custom Attribute</p></figcaption></figure>

# Collecting Customer Data

This article will help you understand how to collect customer data through forms and pop-ups.

# Segmentation

Segmentation is the process of breaking down your user base or market into small groups to understand them better and create marketing strategies to engage with them and drive conversions.

Segmentation helps a business identify and choose the most potentially profitable customer groups to focus on. This depends not only on customer needs, behavior and likelihood to pay, but also on which groups the company is best suited to serve given its brand, products and differentiators.

### Basic Rules of Segmentation

The biggest problem faced by businesses is understanding where to begin when segmenting their customer base. There are numerous ways to slice the cake - you simply need to find the best way suited to your business needs.

Here are a few guidelines to help you out:

1. **Define Your Goals**

Before you set out to segment your user base, have a clear idea of your goals - what do you hope to achieve by creating user segments?

Is it - driving new users to make their first purchase?\
Is it - pushing users to sign up for your product/service?\
Is it - driving customer retention and repeat purchases?\
User segmentation should give you focus so that you can develop contextual campaigns which guide a user’s actions toward the desired goal.

2\. **Create Small Segments**

Segments are the guiding force behind your marketing campaigns - so the smaller the segment, the higher the chances that your message will resonate with the audience.

Why?

Because it has been refined to address the needs of that particular segment! So don’t stop at creating broad segments, create mutually exclusive micro-segments which will help you communicate better with your users.

3\. **Create Practical Segments**

While segmenting your user base into micro segments, do keep in mind that the size of the segment is practical enough to engage. Over-segmenting users can sometimes lead to the creation of tiny groups of users based on small data points, which may not give clear insights. It becomes difficult to optimize marketing campaigns targeted at such small segments due to the lack of valuable insight and can also add a significant load to your marketing budget.

1. **Create Highly Differentiated Segments**

When creating user segments, make sure that users of each segment have discernibly different needs and behavioral patterns. If you are unable to distinguish segments by describing each with three adjectives, then it's highly likely that you have created segments whose needs are pretty much the same. We suggest you scrap them and start again.

**Create Segments Based on the Stages of Your User Lifecycle**

There are several ways in which you can segment your user base, but the best way is to start with something which impacts your revenues directly - the user lifecycle. Creating segments based on the stages of your user lifecycle can help you push users toward conversion at each step, with relevant communication.

### Segment By User Attributes/Properties:

```
   With a User Property filter, you can group customers based on their properties
   like City, Total Orders, Last Order At, etc.
```

### Segment By Performed Activity:

```
 With the 'Performed Event' filter, you can group customers based on certain
 activities they might have performed.
 For example, you can segment customers by those who have performed the 'Purchased'
 activity in the last 60 days.
```

### Segment By Not Performed Activity:

```
 With the 'Not Performed Event' filter, you can group customers based on
 certain activities they might not have performed.
 For example, you can segment customers by those who have not performed the 'Purchased'
 activity in the last 60 days.
```

### Segment Example - Inactive Loyal Customers

Let's try to create a segment of customers who are loyal, have spent more than 10,000 on your store, and haven't been purchasing anything for the last 3 months.

To create this segment, we will define the following rules:

1. User Attribute Filter:\
   a. 'Total Spent' > 10,000
2. Performed Event Filter:\
   a. Not Performed 'Purchased' in last 3 months.

<figure><img src="/files/T00QXM6UBy0D6AsKsstr" alt=""><figcaption><p>Create Segment - Inactive Loyal Customers</p></figcaption></figure>

# Segment Types

### Static List

These are nothing but a list of CSV customers that you can upload. The static segment doesn't change once it is created, users in these segments are fixed. Learn more about the Static Segment.

### Real-time Segments

Dynamic segments keep themselves updated based on the rules mentioned for the segments. Dynamic segments can be defined using three rules:

* **Segment By User Attributes/Properties:**
  * With a User Property filter, you can group customers based on their properties like City, Total Orders, Last Order At, etc.

<figure><img src="/files/2R1Qk2e0FupgpCGHAaTo" alt=""><figcaption><p>Segment by User Attribute</p></figcaption></figure>

* **Segment By Performed Activity:**
  * With the 'Performed Event' filter, you can group customers based on certain activities they might have performed.
  * For example, you can segment customers by those who have performed the 'Purchased' activity in the last 60 days.

<figure><img src="/files/tJtX7Tor8yXHicQFXjWz" alt=""><figcaption><p>Segment by Performed Activity</p></figcaption></figure>

* **Segment By Not Performed Activity:**
  * With the 'Not Performed Event' filter, you can group customers based on certain activities they might have not performed.
  * For example, you can segment customers by those who have not performed the 'Purchased' activity in the last 60 days.

<figure><img src="/files/RxPEg7BtLH9WhHhsHwZF" alt=""><figcaption><p>Segment by Not Performed Activity</p></figcaption></figure>

# Creating Segments

A segment is a group of users with similar behaviors. Using segments, you can create a group of customers based on their properties like location, profile, or past activities. You can learn more about segments from [**this article**](/customers-and-segments/segmentation).

### **Creating Dynamic Segments** <a href="#h_12127149ef" id="h_12127149ef"></a>

You can follow the instructions given below to create dynamic segments.

### **Step 1: Navigate To Segments** <a href="#h_8eefcec329" id="h_8eefcec329"></a>

Navigate to Growlytics Dashboard > Customers > Saved Segments. Click on the 'Create Segment' button in the top right corner.

<figure><img src="https://downloads.intercomcdn.com/i/o/550019552/cf80c95915f7f1b445577022/image.png" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

When you click on the 'Create Segment' button, you will be redirected to the Create Segment page.

<figure><img src="/files/Fft3rVJRppDqzxsYiOAX" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

### **Step 2: Specify Segment Filters** <a href="#h_5fb2600338" id="h_5fb2600338"></a>

In this step, you will need to define filter criteria for the segments. You can define three criteria here:&#x20;

1. User Attribute Filter
2. Performed Event Filter, and&#x20;
3. Not Performed Event filter.

#### User Attribute Filter <a href="#h_2124eb273b" id="h_2124eb273b"></a>

Click on the 'User Attribute' button and select the user property you want to filter by, select the comparison type (equal, not equal, greater than), and mention the value you want to compare to.

<figure><img src="/files/xcbFB4rutDGjdfkR1jmj" alt=""><figcaption><p>Segmentation: User Attribute Filter</p></figcaption></figure>

#### Event Performed/Not Performed Filters <a href="#h_0fca7eef32" id="h_0fca7eef32"></a>

For event filters, you can apply the filter for whether the customer has performed an event or the customer has not performed an event. Click on the 'Performed Event' or the 'Not Performed Event' button to continue.

Select an event from the event list

<figure><img src="https://downloads.intercomcdn.com/i/o/550051755/05320e8fe9f9ff97162a7d77/image.png" alt=""><figcaption><p>Segmentation: Event Performed/Not Performed Filter</p></figcaption></figure>

Specify the number of times the user should have done that event (Not applicable for 'Not Performed'). Next, provide the timing duration to check whether the customer has done that activity in that given time range.

<figure><img src="https://downloads.intercomcdn.com/i/o/549948811/9f70d3a33553eac99b8d90d2/image.png" alt=""><figcaption><p>Segmentation: Event Performed Criteria</p></figcaption></figure>

Here you can not only just check the event performed/not performed, but you can also check if the customer has performed the event with the given attribute value. To do that, click on the 'Add \[Event Name] Condition' button below the event name that you have selected.

<figure><img src="https://downloads.intercomcdn.com/i/o/550054562/db1cf212f229190d4c7a39c6/image.png" alt=""><figcaption><p>Segmentation: Add Attribute Value</p></figcaption></figure>

Here you can select the attribute to check for condition, and specify the comparison type and value to compare with.

<figure><img src="https://downloads.intercomcdn.com/i/o/550055377/432a5f745a5482b2ebf438b3/image.png" alt=""><figcaption><p>Segementation: Attribute Comparison</p></figcaption></figure>

You can put multiple conditions for given events here and specify if any of the conditions should match or if all conditions should match.

<figure><img src="https://downloads.intercomcdn.com/i/o/550056645/4bbdd9d162d14f371db60bd1/image.png" alt=""><figcaption><p>Segmentation: Conditions Matching or Not</p></figcaption></figure>

<figure><img src="https://downloads.intercomcdn.com/i/o/549952023/ee76ff11b037c9fd83bd8c78/image.png" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

### **Example - Create Segment: Inactive Loyal Customers** <a href="#h_2a0e0f6388" id="h_2a0e0f6388"></a>

Let's try to create a segment of customers who are loyal, have spent more than $10,000 on your store, and haven't purchased anything for the last 3 months. However, they may have done 'Add to Cart' at least once in the last 30 days that they have visited the website.

To create this segment, we will define the following rules:

1. Customer Attribute Filter 'Total Spent' > $10,000
2. Performed Event 'Add To Cart' in the last 30 days.
3. Not Performed Event 'Purchased' in last 3 months.&#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/3IUbxULLVmA0pYYNWT9U" alt=""><figcaption><p>Creating a Segment - Inactive Loyal Customers</p></figcaption></figure>

You're done with creating a user segment. Now follow it up by creating a campaign to target these users. Learn more about creating campaigns in [**this article**](/campaigns/campaigns-overview).

# Creating Static Lists

Marketers often perform their custom analysis on the users and user data. Post the analysis, growth teams would want to use these users in a campaign or perform further analysis.

These users can be uploaded to Growlytics and used as Static Lists. These can then be used for Growlytics Campaigns or Analytics.

Static Lists provide flexibility to create and target user segments that you may have identified through some user analysis at your end. You can import a list of users containing one of the User Attributes that identifies a unique user, and a custom segment of these users gets created.

Follow this tutorial and the steps mentioned below to create your own Static List.

<figure><img src="/files/U77uPd4IN8E250nF7T7J" alt=""><figcaption><p>Creating a Static List</p></figcaption></figure>

**Step 1:**

Navigate to Growlytics Dashboard > Customers > Static Lists > Create Static lists

<figure><img src="/files/odmnoF8FWbl24ujWuu7p" alt=""><figcaption><p>Create Static Lists</p></figcaption></figure>

#### **Step 2:** <a href="#h_bc4dde6207" id="h_bc4dde6207"></a>

Click on Select File to Upload CSV > Purpose of Upload > Click on Continue

If you're selecting Upload & Add to New Static List you need to provide a custom Static List Name. If not then you can choose from the existing Static List.

<figure><img src="/files/u9PdG1WZr6VFopvIo0MG" alt=""><figcaption><p>Import Customers</p></figcaption></figure>

#### **Step 3:** <a href="#h_be468cdf00" id="h_be468cdf00"></a>

Select the User Attribute that your list is using. For example, if you have a list of the Name of the users, select the Name from the 'Select Attribute to Map' dropdown.

If you want to create a new attribute, Select Create New Attribute > Enter User Attribute Name > Select Attribute Data Type from the drop-down.\
\
Provide an email where Growlytics can send an update, once the segment is created.

<figure><img src="https://downloads.intercomcdn.com/i/o/549335838/663df69505abb9d2c8e8e016/image.png" alt=""><figcaption><p>Set User Attribute</p></figcaption></figure>

#### **File Format** <a href="#h_98c27298a1" id="h_98c27298a1"></a>

Please check your file before uploading it to Growlytics. Make sure the file that you upload does not have duplicate values, special characters, double quotes, or empty rows.

* It should be a .csv file
* Please don't specify headers in the .csv file.
* A maximum of 25 columns are allowed.
* A maximum of 10,000 records can be uploaded at a time.
* Please specify at least one column as your uniquely identifiable system id.

And that’s it, you have successfully added Static Lists to Growlytics.

If you have any queries regarding Static lists, reach out to us at <support@growlytics.in><br>

# RFM Analysis

### **What is RFM (recency, frequency, monetary) analysis?** <a href="#h_50a7207ff6" id="h_50a7207ff6"></a>

Usually, we segment customers based on events they perform like Abandoned Carts, Did Not Purchase in the past few months, and so on. But when it comes to segmenting all your customers based on activities they perform on their entire life cycle, the best way to do it is using RFM analysis.

RFM (Recency, Frequency, and Monetary) analysis is a marketing technique used to rank and group customers into different segments based on how recently they have purchased, how frequently they are purchasing, and how much they are spending.

The RFM technique assigns each customer a numerical score based on these factors to provide an objective analysis. RFM analysis is based on the marketing theory that "80% of your business comes from 20% of your customers".

<figure><img src="/files/YnRuTSo6XXE5XO0hmcld" alt=""><figcaption><p>Where to find the RFM analysis</p></figcaption></figure>

\
**What Are the Benefits of an RFM Analysis?**

RFM analysis helps you group your entire customer database and helps you improve customer retention while increasing the overall customer lifecycle value. With RFM analysis, you can get answers that matter the most to your revenue growth:

* How many customers we may lose this month? How much revenue were they generating?
* How many customers are close to being our loyal customers?
* How much revenue our loyal customers are generating?

### **How does RFM score calculation work?** <a href="#h_affc591d98" id="h_affc591d98"></a>

RFM analysis gives a score to each customer based on three factors: recency, frequency, and monetary.

* **Recency:** How recent was the customer's last purchase?
* **Frequency:** How often customer made the purchase in a given period?
* **Monetary:** How much money did the customer spend in a given period?

Based on the above three factors, a score from 1 to 5 is given to each customer, with 5 being the highest. The collection of these three parameter values for each customer is called an RFM segment/group.

### **Understanding RFM Segments** <a href="#h_b26442dd38" id="h_b26442dd38"></a>

Instead of simply using an overall RFM average value to identify the best customers, you can use RFM analysis to identify segments of customers with similar values called RFM segments.

<figure><img src="https://downloads.intercomcdn.com/i/o/347211689/eee8cf127939004220f25b75/Screenshot+2021-06-08+at+9.12.29+AM.png" alt=""><figcaption><p>RFM Analysis</p></figcaption></figure>

You can use these segments for targeted marketing campaigns on different marketing channels. Some examples of customer types include:

* **Can Not Lose Them:** Users who were active at one point in your site/app, but haven’t been back recently - Strong candidates to re-engage.
* **At-Risk:** Users having above-average frequency but low recency - Strong candidates to re-engage.
* **Hibernating:** Users having the lowest recency and frequency scores. You may lose these customers.
* **Loyal Customers:** Users with the highest frequency of use with strong recency.
* **Champions:** Most active users, having the highest recency and frequency scores.
* **Need Attention:** Most active users, having the highest recency and frequency scores.

### Automated Targeting of RFM Segments

Let's take a look at this uber-cool feature where you can automatically target a particular segment in your RFM analysis. In our example here we would like to send out communications to those customers who are in the 'Potential Loyalist' Segment. Now, why would we lose out on an entire group of customers who can become our loyal customers?

Here is how we create the Potential Loyalist Segment

* Click on 'Customers' on the Menu Tab&#x20;
* Select 'RFM Segments'
* Select the event for RFM analysis, in our example, we are going to click on 'Purchased' and change the timeline to 'last 6 months'.
* You will now see the RFM analysis for that period
* Hover your cursor over the required segment, in our example, we will hover over the 'Potential Loyalist' block
* Click on 'Create Segment' on the pop-up and you are done! &#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/xL6mCyploGmrjWCto5pP" alt=""><figcaption><p>Creating an RFM segment </p></figcaption></figure>

Now that we have our segment, let's go ahead and automate it.

* [Create the journey](/journeys-and-automation/journeys-basics/create-a-journey) as per your requirement.&#x20;
* Now that you have your template in position, click on the [Journey Entry Point](/journeys-and-automation/journey-builder/journey-entry-points).
* Click on 'Customer Enters/Exits Segment', and select the segment of your choice. In our example, we are going to use the 'RFM - Potential Loyalists' segment that we created from the RFM Analysis.&#x20;
* You're all done! You just have to review the settings and [Publish Journey](/journeys-and-automation/journeys-basics/journey-statuses/running-journey#how-to-publish-a-journey).&#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/5nvl9n8fGBTpKaRVUinq" alt=""><figcaption><p>Adding an RFM Segment to Journeys</p></figcaption></figure>

# Campaign Settings

{% hint style="info" %}
**Good to know:** Depending on the product you're building, it can be useful to explicitly document use cases. Got a product that can be used by a bunch of people in different ways? Maybe consider splitting it out!
{% endhint %}

Campaigns help you communicate with your customers. Through campaigns, you can broadcast messages with the click of a button, or send automated messages to customers when they do or do not perform certain activities on your website/app.&#x20;

Campaign setting will enable you to make changes to or set certain parameters for all your campaigns.&#x20;

One such parameter is [**Frequency Capping**](/account-settings/campaign-settings/setting-up-frequency-capping)&#x20;

It is natural that you will have multiple campaigns running at the same time. With your growing customer base, it is expected that one customer may fall into multiple segments. This will lead to that one customer receiving multiple communication from you and may result in unsubscription or even loss of a customer.&#x20;

This is where Frequency Capping comes into play. This allows you to place a limit on the number of messages your customers receive over a given period of time. Thus ensuring that your customers are not bombarded with too many messages.&#x20;

Head on to the next article to know more about setting up a Frequency Cap. &#x20;

# Setting up Frequency Capping

Knowing when not to send a message can be as critical to your messaging campaigns as knowing when to send one. There must be a balance between under- and over-engagement. And the Frequency Capping feature does exactly that.

Frequency Capping allows clients to put a hard stop on how many messages customers will receive on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis. If you are simultaneously running multiple automations and campaigns, you can use this feature to specify a limit on the number of automated messages a customer can receive in a given time period.

For example, you can impose a limit of 5 email messages in a 24-hour period, preventing customers from receiving more than 5 email messages in a day.

### How does it work?

1. On the Growlytics dashboard, you can set the limit for each messaging channel: email, sms, WhatsApp, web push, etc.
2. For each channel, you can define the maximum number of messages that can be sent.
3. If the limit exceeds max allowed messages for that channel, the messages will be ignored and will not be sent to customers.
4. You can decide at the campaign level whether to follow 'Frequency Capping' or not. This will help you ignore frequency capping and send messages any way for transactional campaign messages.

### How to set up frequency capping limits?

You can use the following steps to set up frequency capping limits:

1. Login to your Growlytics dashboard => Click on Settings from the left menu => Click on Campaign Settings => Click on Frequency Capping Tab.

<figure><img src="/files/fRDUdNpMXKuSFLjV1XjT" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

2\. You will see a table like the one in the screenshot above. Here you can specify the maximum number of messages that can be sent to customers on different channels.

3\. You can also set the 'Max Allowed Messages combining all the messaging channels.

### Apply Frequency Capping in campaigns

While creating a campaign, on the first Basic Info step, you will see a 'Follow Frequency Capping' checkbox, set it to true if you want to follow Frequency Capping, keep it false otherwise.

<figure><img src="/files/aLbg1oMnrtGBxJUo0cnS" alt=""><figcaption><p>Frequency Capping in Campaigns</p></figcaption></figure>

### Apply Frequency Capping in journey automations

While saving journey settings, you will see the 'Follow Frequency Capping' checkbox, set it to true if you want to follow Frequency Capping for the journey, keep it false otherwise.

<figure><img src="/files/bhhXMoVT8SVPrauniSzI" alt=""><figcaption><p>Frequency Capping in Journey Automations</p></figcaption></figure>

# Email Integrations

Email integrations are the tying together of systems, tools, and software for seamless processes around email marketing. They are what allow marketers to unite their email service provider with systems like their CRM or point-of-sale system for even more personalized, relevant, and efficient messages.

In fact, the beauty of integrations is that they allow you to spend less time combing through contacts and yet you will know and understand your audience better, leading to more engagement and better results for your email marketing strategy.

You can also find integrations that bring design elements into your emails to create more compelling messages and improve your email open rate and click-through rate.

# AWS SES

# Email Deliverability

Tackle bounces and failure while your emails get delivered without a hitch!

When you are sending a large number of emails, it is inevitable that some will bounce. There are many reasons for emails getting bounced by receiving server.&#x20;

The reasons can be:&#x20;

* A typo in the email address,&#x20;
* The receiving email server is down,&#x20;
* The recipient's mail account is deleted, or something else.

#### How Growlytics handles delivery failures and bounces?

When Growlytics receives bounces and complaints, it internally marks the email invalid, making sure no more communication happens on that email and your domain reputation is maintained.&#x20;

The following table explains the reasons for emails not getting delivered, their details, and what Growlytics does in these scenarios.

<table><thead><tr><th width="113">Reason</th><th width="162">Type</th><th>Description</th><th>Growlytics Action</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><strong>Bounce</strong></td><td>Hard Bounce</td><td>An email account is deleted or email address is invalid.</td><td>Mark email as invalid and don't send emails.</td></tr><tr><td></td><td>Soft Bounce</td><td>Email storage is full or for some reason can't accept emails right now.</td><td>Don't send emails for the next 5 days.</td></tr><tr><td></td><td>Autoresponder</td><td>Out of Office, "Your message was received", etc.</td><td>No action.</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Spams</strong></td><td>Complaint</td><td>Email owner marked your email as spam.</td><td>Mark email as invalid and don't send emails.</td></tr><tr><td></td><td>Blocked</td><td>The recipient email server stopped accepting emails for some reason.</td><td>Mark email as invalid and don't send emails.<br>It is advised that you investigate why this is happening with your ESP.</td></tr><tr><td></td><td>Notification</td><td>The recipient email server blocked delivery of an email due to do domain or IP reputation problem.</td><td>Mark email as invalid and don't send emails. It is advised that you investigate why this is happening with your ESP.</td></tr></tbody></table>

### What should you do for handling bounces?

In most cases, Growlytics automatically handles different bounce and spam scenarios. But for the following scenarios, it's better if you get in touch with your Email Service Provider and investigate the root cause of delivery failure and fix it.

1. **Domain Reputation Issue:** If emails are bouncing under this category, it's better if you get in touch with your ESP, discuss the root cause, and fix the issue.
2. **Spam (Blocked):** For this category, Growlytics does mark emails as invalid. But if this happens for the bulk of the emails, it's better you get in touch with your ESP, discuss the root cause, and fix the issue.

While Growlytics, automatically handles the bounces, there are certain scenarios that you should look into and fix it manually.

The normal trend for email delivery failures can be broken down into the following percentages. If your email delivery failures are in this category, this is a normal trend, but if it's not in range, then you should investigate the reason for it and fix it.

<table><thead><tr><th width="324">Category</th><th>Percentage</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>Hard Bounces</td><td>80% of delivery failures</td></tr><tr><td>Soft Bounces</td><td>10% of delivery failures</td></tr><tr><td>Spam complaints/notifications</td><td>3% to 4% of delivery failures</td></tr><tr><td>Other</td><td>1% to 2% other delivery failure reasons.</td></tr></tbody></table>

These numbers will give you a fair idea of what to expect when emails are not delivered.

### Best practices to reduce email bounces

Click [here](/best-practices/email-deliverability/best-practices-to-reduce-your-email-bounce-rates) to learn more about how you can reduce the number of emails getting bounced.

# Best practices to reduce your email bounce rates

There are different reasons why emails bounce. Click [**here**](/best-practices/email-deliverability#how-growlytics-handles-delivery-failures-and-bounces) to know more about it. In this article, we will go through the best practices to improve your delivery rate and prevent your emails from bouncing.

Before that, let's take a look at the delivery factors that are under your control. experimenting with these elements will tell you which ones will have a big impact on deliverability and which ones are not as important.  &#x20;

1. **The quality of your contact list -** This is always important, but if you’re a new sender, or your IP is new, this is all the ISP knows about you.
2. **The frequency and relevancy of your emails -** If you send emails every day, ISPs will be stricter with you. You absolutely need to segment your mailing list in this case.&#x20;

   Are you sending the same message to everyone?

   Are you personalizing content?

   This will have a big impact on engagement and thus deliverability.
3. **The content and format of your messages -** This matters, but not as much as some would believe. Spammy messages from a sender with a high reputation will have fewer deliverability issues than valuable messages from a sender with a poor reputation. Nevertheless, it’s good to avoid using spammy tactics.
4. **Sender reputation -** Extremely important, but not quite as in your control as the other above factors. It deserves more attention.

### Always do a warm-up before you start sending emails

When you switch from one email service provider to another, the email server used for sending your emails will change as well. Your new ESP's email servers are not allowed to send a large number of emails at the same time, so to make sure the emails are delivered properly, you will need to start with a small number of emails and increase the number of emails over time.

The email warm-up process plays a crucial role in email deliverability, avoiding it can result in a lot of emails not being delivered permanently.

Click [**here**](/best-practices/email-deliverability/how-to-warm-up-the-email-server-on-growlytics) to learn more about how to do email warm-ups with Growlytics.

### Always opt-in users to receive emails

Any serious email marketer uses opt-in to make sure they are not sending emails to customers who have not opted-in to receive emails. Opt-in can be achieved by asking for email IDs from popups while customers are on your site or you can ask for it when they signup on to your site or do a checkout to make the purchase.

In short, with opt-in, your customer knows that they are okay to receive emails from you. This will reduce the probability of them marking your emails as spam and reporting or blocking your email domain.

### Clean up the email list before you send any emails

A lot of emails bounce because your customer database is old and emails do not exist. There are also cases when you want to upload your offline customers to Growlytics, for these customers also, you will need to check for invalid emails which may bounce.

There are many popular services out there to clean your email list like [zerobounce.net](https://www.zerobounce.net/) or [neverbounce.com](https://neverbounce.com/). You can see the comparisons of top service providers here. This will remove invalid, deleted, and misspelled addresses — this is likely to increase your open rate.

### Always personalize your emails

Always personalize the emails, as they are more likely to get past spam filters and get opened. Adding personalization to the subject line can increase the open rates by 25%.

Generally, email clients like Gmail look for large numbers of incoming emails with the exact same subject line and email contents to categorize them into Promotions or emails as spam categories. For instance, by adding the name of the user to your subject line you’re able to reduce the chances of your message getting flagged as spam.

### Don't use your first campaign as a way to 'clean' your list!

It's a bad idea to use a test campaign to clean your email list, email service providers have a very strict policy for this, and they may even stop providing you services if they notice such things.

If you send a campaign to an unverified email list, not only do you risk an account suspension, but you put yourself at a major disadvantage because you damage your own Sender Reputation.

It's better you use proper email clean-up services like [zerobounce.net](https://www.zerobounce.net/) or [neverbounce.com](https://neverbounce.com/). You can see the comparisons of top service providers here.

If you damage your email domain reputation by accident, your next campaign may experience even more blocks as recipient servers reject your mail. It's better if you spend a little time on making your list as clean to keep your sender reputation high.

### Verify your sender domain

When a recipient mail server receives your email, it basically asks, “Is this email from an authentic email server whose owner is the same as it says it is from?”

For this, the recipient mail server checks DNS records, specifically SPF and DKIM records associated with the domain you are using for sending emails.

If the recipient mail server doesn't find the required information on the domain you are using to send the emails, your email will start getting rejected and bouncing, which will eventually reduce your email domain reputation.

In short, make sure the following setup is done:

1. Make sure SPF records are properly configured
2. Make sure DKIM, and DMARC records are present and correct

### Make sure your email doesn't look like spam

You need to be very careful about the contents of the email. Spam filters of recipient clients like Gmail are there to decide whether or not your email looks like spam.

The problem is that because spammers are always changing their algorithms and tactics, the filters have to change too. Hence, you can't just "set it and forget it". You have to make sure that your email template complies and doesn't have any pattern that makes it seem like spam.

You can use tools like [mail-tester.com](https://www.mail-tester.com/) or [mailgenius.com](https://www.mailgenius.com/) to help you stay on track or understand the changes to the format, wording, links, or content which will make sure your emails aren't treated as spam.

### Consider sending emails on a schedule

Try to stay regular and consistent on your mailing schedule, it is less likely for your subscribers to forget that they agreed to receive mail from your business or group.

If you stop sending emails in between and suddenly send a big campaign, it gets marked as a spike by the recipient servers and may result in email bounces.

This doesn't mean you need to send out emails daily. It is more about staying consistent with engagement patterns. Plan an engagement pattern and do your best to stick to it.

### Make sure your sending server is not blacklisted

If a large number of the emails you send out are not getting delivered, then do a quick check to see whether your sending server is blacklisted or not. You can use a variety of services to do so. [MXToolbox](https://mxtoolbox.com/) is one such service you can use to check if your sending IP is blacklisted or not.

### Dos and Donts for Email Deliverability&#x20;

| Things to Do | Things to Avoid |
| -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Sign up to [Google Postmaster](/best-practices/email-deliverability/best-practices-to-reduce-your-email-bounce-rates/domain-reputation-with-google-postmaster), These services will give you insights into your reputation with these ISPs. | Buying, renting, or harvesting email addresses will not allow you to gauge the quality of your mailing list. This can also cause a violation of guidelines like the GDPR |
| A memorable email sign-up process will reduce the chances of your emails being marked as spam. Having a double opt-in sign-up will give you a 70% success rate. A CAPTCHA on your registration page will prevent spambots from polluting your list. | Sending emails to people who don’t want them or can’t receive them are likely to increase your spam complaints and can also put you in violation of the GDPR. |
| Use email engagement to manage email frequency. Only your most engaged audiences should receive the most emails. You can use list segmentation to help manage this. Score your content with spam-checking tools. You don’t want your emails to get blocked for bad coding. You can find free tools online to help you out. | Sending to group email addresses (e.g. info@, sales@). ISPs want emails to be sent at an individual level, and don’t look kindly upon this activity. Plus, there’s always the chance that someone in the email group will mark your message as spam. |
| Review your campaign reports at an ISP level. Monitor bounce and complaint rates at an ISP level and look for signs of your emails being bulk sent to spam for certain ISPs. | Old or inactive email IDs don't add to your revenue, hence sending emails to these users will hurt your metrics. Email IDs without any engagement for the last 180 days should ideally be transferred to a re-engagement program. |
| Use email tools that show how your email renders across all devices and browsers thus ensuring it renders for everyone. Emails that don’t render properly can result in no engagement or spam complaints. Emails that render correctly also increase your trustworthiness in the eyes of the ISPs. | Sending emails with spammy language. USING ALL CAPS, ending sentences with lots of punctuation (!!!), using too much “super-hot exclusive sale!” terminology…the ISPs don’t like any of it, and neither do your customers. |
| Maintain a proper text-to-image ratio. ISPs prefer more text than images, with an ideal ratio of 60:40. Try to limit your email size to a maximum of 100KB. | |
| Make it easy to unsubscribe from your emails. It might seem counterintuitive, but the alternative is for users to report you as spam. Respect the desires of your audience. | |
| Use personalization as it increases engagement rates, which is good for your sender reputation as well as revenue. Make your emails as tailored as possible, and go beyond just using first names. Incorporate things like behavioral data, purchase data, and user preferences. | |

# Domain Reputation with Google Postmaster

You can use Google Postmaster Tools to check the overall health of your domain. In addition, Google Postmaster Tools can be used to help monitor and debug all kinds of deliverability issues. One thing here to note is that the delivery reports are based on the emails sent to customers who Gmail use Gmail, for others, Google Postmaster does not show the reports.

## What is Google Postmaster? <a href="#h_e7c12a5577" id="h_e7c12a5577"></a>

Google Postmaster is a free tool that you can use to analyze your email performance and check your domain reputation. It provides all the details regarding the SPF/DKIM/DMARC failures, spam complaints, the reputation of your sending server's IP address, and more.

Google Postmaster is a really good tool and we recommend that everyone should set it up to check if there are any chances for improving the email delivery rates. With the kind of reports this tool gives, you can easily monitor and debug any issues related to email deliverability.

## How to set up Google Postmaster? <a href="#h_85fa408d67" id="h_85fa408d67"></a>

To setup Google Postmaster, you will need to signup on google postmaster and you will need to verify your sending domain with few DNS records. The authentication domain is the DKIM (d=) that is used to authenticate your email. Google Postmaster uses your DKIM to identify your email traffic and provide access to traffic analytics.

# How to warm up the email server on Growlytics

When you switch from one email service provider to another, the email server used for sending your emails will change as well. Your new ESP's email servers are not allowed to send large numbers of emails at the same time, so to make sure the emails are delivered properly, you will need to start with a small number of emails and increase the number of emails over time.

The email warm-up process plays a crucial role in email deliverability, avoiding it can result in a lot of emails not being delivered permanently.

### Basic Requirements and Recommendations before the warm-up

1. Before you import your customers into Growlytics, it's important you clean your email list. There are many services out there that you can use like [zerobounce.net](https://www.zerobounce.net/) or [neverbounce.com](https://neverbounce.com/). This will remove invalid, misspelled, and 'catch-all' addresses — this is likely to increase your open rate.
2. Set up **SPF, DKIM,** and **Tracking** signatures.
3. Configure the **PTR** and **reverse DNS** records with your email service providers.

### Warm-up Process

Use the following steps to warm up your email servers:

1. Before you import your customers into Growlytics, it is important you clean your email list. There are many services out there that you can use like [zerobounce.net](https://www.zerobounce.net/) or [neverbounce.com](https://neverbounce.com/).
2. If you haven't imported customers into Growlytics, you will need to **import your customers** from the previous marketing automation platform to Growlytics.
3. Create small segments which involve your most active customers.
4. Follow the warm-up plan given below and run email campaigns accordingly.
5. During your warm-up, try not to send more than 1 campaign per day.

### Warm-up Plan

Let’s say you have 20,000 contacts in your database. When warming your IP(s), your campaign sends should ideally look like this:

| Warm Up Plan                   |
| ------------------------------ |
| Day1: Send 50-100 Emails       |
| Day2: Send 100-200 Emails      |
| Day4: Send 200-300 Emails      |
| Day5: Send 300-400 Emails      |
| Day7: Send 400-500 Emails      |
| Day8: Send 500-600 Emails      |
| Day10: Send 600-700 Emails     |
| Day11: Send 700-800 Emails     |
| Day13: Send 800-900 Emails     |
| Day14: Send 900-1000 Emails    |
| Day16: Send 1000-2000 Emails   |
| Day17: Send 2000-3000 Emails   |
| Day19: Send 3000-4000 Emails   |
| Day20: Send 4000-5000 Emails   |
| Day22: Send 5000-6000 Emails   |
| Day23: Send 6000-7000 Emails   |
| Day25: Send 7000-8000 Emails   |
| Day26: Send 8000-9000 Emails   |
| Day28: Send 9000-10000 Emails  |
| Day29: Send 10000-12000 Emails |
| Day31: Send 12000-14000 Emails |
| Day32: Send 14000-16000 Emails |
| Day34: Send 16000-18000 Emails |
| Day36: Send 18000-20000 Emails |
| Day37: Send 20000-22000 Emails |

Keep track of your campaign metrics. If you think you are getting more bounces and complaints, do not go to the next step, keep your campaign customers the same and try sending the emails once again.

# Data Management

<table data-view="cards"><thead><tr><th align="center"></th><th data-hidden data-card-cover data-type="files"></th><th data-hidden data-card-target data-type="content-ref"></th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td align="center"><strong>Events</strong></td><td><a href="/files/LmymRbQU437pboPKgyQU">/files/LmymRbQU437pboPKgyQU</a></td><td><a href="/pages/KRIY16CXnAIcKF3rltt4">/pages/KRIY16CXnAIcKF3rltt4</a></td></tr><tr><td align="center"><strong>Data Discrepancies</strong></td><td><a href="/files/n0yZNJmEk5eYKBHi1uKk">/files/n0yZNJmEk5eYKBHi1uKk</a></td><td><a href="/pages/erSaAIJsKBFFlEFJW2ls">/pages/erSaAIJsKBFFlEFJW2ls</a></td></tr></tbody></table>

# Events

Events are nothing but the actions that are performed by the users on your website or app. For example, when a user clicks on a product to view its details, then it is advisable to track this action as an event (Product Viewed) as it is part of your conversion funnel and it brings the customer a step closer to making a purchase. Events give you a clear understanding of the behavior of your users on your website/app.

### Event Attributes

The term event attribute refers to all the details attached to an event that helps us understand its context. You can think of attributes as adjectives that give an event a character and explain what it’s all about. For example, a 'Product Viewed' event can have attributes like Product Name, Price, Category, etc.

### Types of Events and Event Attributes

When using your Growlytics account, you will notice that events and event attributes are bucketed into two different types:&#x20;

1. System Events &#x20;
2. Custom Events.&#x20;

Let’s understand this in detail.

### System Events

At Growlytics we have predefined a comprehensive list of all the generic events which are performed by users when interacting with your website. These events are called system events. Examples of such events are:

* App Installed
* App Uninstalled
* Session Started
* Page Visited
* WebPush Subscribed
* UTM Visited

### Custom Events

Custom events are the events you track to measure business KPIs and use them to engage with customers with automation. To help you understand this concept, let’s take the example of a mobile e-commerce app and map out the actions its users need to perform to make a purchase. So, for the e-commerce app, typical events are mentioned below:

| User Actions                | Custom Event              |
| --------------------------- | ------------------------- |
| Search for a product        | Product Searched          |
| View product details | Product Viewed |
| Select Product Quantity | Product Quantity Selected |
| Add to Cart | Add to Cart |
| View Cart                   | Cart Viewed               |
| Initiate Check Out | Checkout Started |
| Add Mode of Payment | Checkout Payment Input |
| Select Delivery Option | Checkout Payment Output |
| Confirm and Place the Order | Purchased |

These are just examples of custom events for an e-commerce app. Depending on your business use case, you can create custom events similar to these.

# Understanding Data Discrepancies

It's not uncommon that Growlytics sessions and other numbers may differ from other vendors like Google Analytics, Mixpanel, etc. This article will help you understand how Growlytics tracks users and sessions.

### Highlights

1. **Time Zone:** Data ingested by Growlytics are timestamped in UTC but in the report, you see the data specified in the time zone of your account (mentioned while setting up the account).
2. **Web bots & Scrapers:** Growlytics' intelligent source identification mechanism makes sure bots and scrapers are ignored for session tracking. Bots like "Googlebot" or any other data scrapers are ignored. This can be the reason you are seeing the discrepancies in a number of sessions.

### Google Analytics Discrepancies

Though Google Analytics and Growlytics track sessions similarly, the following table outlines factors that cause a discrepancy in your session numbers.

<table><thead><tr><th width="219.33333333333331">Scenario</th><th>Growlytics</th><th>Google Analytics</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>Time hits midnight</td><td>Session continues</td><td>The current session ends at 11:59 PM and the new session starts at 12:00 AM.</td></tr><tr><td>Campaign source changes</td><td>Session continues</td><td>New session begins even if it is within the 30-minute threshold.</td></tr><tr><td>Session Event Limit</td><td>No limit</td><td>After the first 10 events, tracking is limited to 1 event per second.</td></tr></tbody></table>
